Being messy

Let's talk about messiness. What's your threshold for disorder? Just how many socks can pile up on the floor before you reach your boiling point? Would it cool your jets a bit to know that a messy brain may be a more creative and efficient one?
First, a bit of background on these musings: I'm tidy, not crazy-person clean, just normal, everyday, surfaces-clear-dishes-washed neat. My live-in boyfriend is not. He's much more, well, relaxed than I am about basic household chores.  He doesn't mind dirty dishes in the sink or clothes on the floor. Actually, it's more than just not minding — he truly does not see the problem. He looks at a mess the same way I look at any inanimate object: he acknowledges its existence and is totally fine with it. I look at a mess and grit my teeth.
So I got to wondering: how is his brain so different from mine, and what creates our opposite reactions to the same situation? Surprisingly, I found very little information. Of course, we've covered messiness here at Apartment Therapy.  We're full of suggestions to fix your messy desk, accept a messy entryway and even figure out if you're chronically disorganized
But what I really want to know is why some people are just messier than others.  And for that matter, what's so wrong with it? The New York Times argues that it's nature, not nurture, that makes us slobs; messiness is a trait that we're born with, not a habit that's developed. That makes sense. I've yet to meet anyone who grew messier with age, and I can easily see how a messy person who does clean up his act may actually be working against his nature in order to fit in with the demands of society or (more likely) his neater significant other.
It occurs to me that suggestions and tips about organizing and de-cluttering always imply that being messy isn't the ideal state. But for my boyfriend it is.  He's perfectly able to relax in a messy room, work at a messy desk and cook in a messy kitchen, all things I could never dream of doing. We (the organizers of the world) assume that everyone wants to be organized, but they just don't know how (hence the plethora of tips). I'm not so sure that's accurate.

Author Roald Dahl at his messy (and productive) desk.
Take a messy desk, for example. Einstein famously had one. So did Roald Dahl.  They both accomplished a lot. Traditional thinking tells us that a clean, organized desk leads to more productivity and efficiency. But this Daily Mail article says it's just the opposite. A messy desk creates more creativity and better problem-solving. Their description of clutter sounds a lot like the concept of white noise: it blurs distractions and allows the brain to focus on one task and make clear choices.
Then there's the controversy about "clean desk" policies in some offices, which imply that there's a right and wrong way for employees to work. With the vast array of ways that creative people think of and develop ideas, limiting how they choose to do that work seems counter-intuituive to the idea of hiring creatives in the first place.
You know what? My messy boyfriend is extremely creative (for a living) and, while I have to pause to clean up before I can accomplish anything, he's productive whenever and wherever he chooses to be.  Will all this make me less exasperated with socks on the floor? Probably not — I'm pretty set in my ways.  But my way, it seems, isn't the only right way to be.

The article is talking about messiness acording to it messy brain maybe a more creative and efficient one and they found just little imformation to cover messiness people, because you don´t know , why some people are just messier than other´s, them messiness is a trait that we´re born with, isn´t a habit that´s developed.
in another case for example other people perfectlyable to relax in a messy room, work, a messydesk and cook in a messy chicken then consecuently assume that every wants to be organized and they don´t know how.
if you have a messydesk creates more creativity and make clear choices, and if you are a messy person you are going to be extremely creative.

  2. I agree with the text. I think that not always a messy desk or a messy room is a problem for us. Even if there are clothes in the floor or garbaje we will find whatever we want in our messines. Like the text says, a messy desk can inspire creativity in us and also we can reach better results in our works.

  3. Being messy is not so bad. As everything it has benefits; but I believe is not the same for everybody. I think it depends in how you feel more comfortable,in your personality and also in the environment; being messy or neat can be because of your humor in that moment. If messiness helps you or stimulates you, you should continue with it but if not keep being neat; it´s on you.

  4. in my opinion if we live between the mess and neat we go direct to the failure or maybe to perfection as a resoult we lost time for example we lost many hours toorganize or put everithing in a particular place or when we looking for something long time . I think we have to be in the middle and don't be exaggerated being messy or neat.

  6. Carlos Mestas. In my opinion we are totaly differents. Each person has a way of thinking and has an ability to play music, to solve problems, to paint and etc. As we know we have skills could be improved but any way creativity is conected with messy. By the way it wouldn't mean that being too messy is good. However, you have to consider being a little bit of neat and mess will help you to live without trouble

  8. I agree with the article.. Being a messy not is a big problem, I think that if you have a messy desk or messy room is depend that the profession that you have. if you are a musician or painter you always have a messy desk or messy room. being a messy for a musician or painter transmite that they are a good professionals, but if you are a teacher or lawyer and you are a messy. it transmite that you are a bad teacher or lawyer.

  10. The phrase of the New York Times really surprise me: “that it's nature, not nurture”; it can be the explanation of the behavior of messy people and I have to recognize that it makes me feel confortable!
I agree with the whole article, and now I know that if I have a messy desk, a messy room, or something disorganized is not the end of the world, is just the way that I’am.
However, in some occasions, maybe ones or twice a week, it’s a good idea clean, clear and organized our spaces of study, work and life, just only to avoid dangerous animals like spiders or cockroaches =)

I think it is imposible to change another person, they have want to change, obviously if the disorder is affecting their personal and work activities.Sometimes you can change the way you feel abaut it but you will never change him. Also i want to say that after reading this and others articles i understand better people who are somewhat disordered,It is ok to be a little disorganized,a little chaos can be good for us,that may help us relax, be more creative and we can learn better. Is ok to bea little messy

LEONOR CONSUELO LEON VILCA.........................................................................................I thought, that is depends tha personality, and how you feel better with yourself, somebody like to work in messy and others extremely neat...but if you are moderate messiness you could have benefits sush us: to achive your goals easily, found a good job with dress cod,to underestood with your coworkers etc...some companies often has a bias toward with their employees.
In summary,i thought is very important tha first impression with appearance but not very extremely... sometimes Tha behavior front others is your education, for that reason you can tried to be a little organized...

  15. Well, I think that this article change all my mind because in the past I thought that the disorder won't help anything. but I disagree with tje part where it says that a messy people born and not made (Nobody was born being a messy people) that is why the adults and young people make excuses like a '' I don't have time'' or '' I have more important things to do'' but it's also bad to be very clean because you can be impersonal and cold. So we have to stay in the middle of disorder or order because not everything is mess we always have to order our room or desk.

i agree with the article but its not necessary that the neatnesspeople are creative and ingenious becauses i know cases where a messy desk helped show a connection between different researchers or works but also if we talk about messiness we have to talk about diferent king of personalities because there are cleanliness or neatness people.

  22. I think that a person can be whatever he wants. It is in the naturalness of each person to be organised or disorganised, but the best would be to be in the middle. There are some people who are comfortable with a quite mess in their home. There are some others that when they see a book out of its place in a shelf, scream crazily and start to tidy up everything at the same moment. Besides, there are even some others that are in the middle. Those who are neither as disordered and have everything pulled all around the place nor as some exaggerated compulsive cleaners who see something out of its place and instantly get altered, so they end up ordering everything. On the other hand, if you ask me, this can also depends on your profession. For example, if you're a doctor, you cannot avoid having your materials in disorder. In the case of an operation, you would be seeking the scalpel or the forceps. So you can endanger the life of a person. From other perspective, if you're a painter who usually have all messy as you consider you would get some inspiration from this. Then it is important that everything has to be a complete mess. As the last example, let's think about those mothers who certainly are pretty obsessed with cleaning. In consequence, they do not allow their children to come into contact with dirt and disorder so the lasts could affect their health. Unless their children's body generate enough defences, they are not ready to be in not-so-clean places and they can contract diseases. In conclusion, it is good to be a little cluttering and not so organized, or remain in the middle.

According to the article, traditional thinking tell,if you work in a organized desk you would be more productive and creative, but Daily Mail article had a opposite thinking because they think if you work in a messy desk you create more creativity, solves problems easily,it blurs distraction and make clear choices.
Now you don't have to be worried if you work in a messy places because you have a good results in your life.

  24. I´m sure that messiness is nature, but I think there isn´t relation between messiness and intelligence. Why did I say it? Because people who are intelligent or maybe who are working in a big a project never spend time in trivial things, such as: what clothes wear, what food eat, what happen in Hollywood and also the mess, just because they are focus on them projects. I would say: "They stop to consume culture because they start to create culture."

  25. In my opinion, the article states that being messy could include many benefits, like in a new study of the University of Minnesota, where is stated that, messiness stimulates our creativity and it's related with higher intelligence. In adittion messy people tend to be involved in a variety of activities simultaneously, so they can develop their multitask abilities. Likewise they easily link ideas, things and people. On the other hand disorganized people prefer to focus on what they interest the most. And finally, to sum up, the moderately messy people tend to be intelligent and creative, in that way they develop a global view of the things and also they can be more flexible and multitask.

In my opinion, this article say, be messy es not a bad signal of undisciplined or you cannot study, being messy could maje people relax and clear their mind and ideas when thy work.
Acording to the article a messy desk creates more creatyvity and better problem-solving, but are many people who were or are messy like Roald Dahl, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc. Sometimes messiness is a signal of productivity and inteligence.

  28. From my point of view, exist many ways to make jobs and everyone has its own rules to develop it whit efficiency, but not always just one has the solution because people are different and they do not think the same. Our brain is awesome that make us peculiar. Through our messiness we manifest our individuality and it shows how creative can be someone because some people on his/her mess can find better ways to job.

  29. GARY CANAL: I think being a messy is is the result of our activities it is about how we can organize our lives to do something many people are messy becuose they do not have time enough to put in order some things for example clean their bedrooms, kitchen or keep in order a messy desk. I a little dissagri according with New York times because it seys that messiness is a trait that we're born with, not a habit that's developed. It can be true but when we are children our parents learn us how to put in order everything we use or take in the same place. Now let's talk about how a messy people feel or get success, there are many people who can work better and efficiently they have their own way to feel comfortable.

  30. Little messy in your life is good because this help to develop new skills who sing, write, draw or have new ideas in your work (be innovative) and today this is the tendency in the companies because search people that help in the innovate and progress of this looing for the blue ocean with less competition.
Other good point is that you spend less time in things that aren't part of your main activity

  31. I think that have a little of mess in your life its good for two points.
the first point talking about the one of a innovate and creative person with a lot of skills who pain, write, draw or diferents things that is so important in companies because companies are so big don't search at people that have past ideas, today companies search the blue ocean and say that the innovate people help in this decision
The second point talking about the good use of time especially when you work its necesary have your head in the main activity and dont think in secondary activities that cause stress when you do a lot of things

It is good to be oneself and not follow prototypes of people that society imposes.
